CHRISTOPHER REMMERS
Teaching has been a long-time passion of mine, holding the same level of interest for me as my love for art and creating large narrative paintings. My interest in teaching was born from my experience as a student, where I saw gaps in what was available and struggled for years because I didn’t have access to the various subjects and fundamental pillars that every student of the arts needs.
Over the years, I have found that to master oil painting, we need to focus on the most critical fundamentals and rudimentary skills. It comes down to breaking a complex idea, image, or composition into its basic parts—value, shape, gesture, and line—and then developing the mechanical skills required to work with paint, mediums, and brushes. This approach helps us grasp a handful of techniques for different textural effects and, most importantly, hone our observational skills.

The course will teach you techniques to add radiance and vibrancy to your figures. Whether it’s creating a luminous skin tone, a glowing background, or vibrant light effects, you’ll master the techniques of glazing and layering that can make your work feel alive and dynamic.
Mix any color and understand how to mix flesh tones
You will learn how to mix realistic flesh tones that appear natural and vibrant. This includes understanding the undertones and nuances of skin colors in different lighting conditions, allowing you to achieve lifelike portraits and figures.
Understand the step-by-step process for painting a figure
You will learn the steps I follow in my own work, including how to block in the major shapes and shadows, how to build up details gradually, and how to refine your work through layers. This system will allow you to approach figure painting with confidence, no matter your skill level.

In this course, I wanted to dispel many of the misconceptions about painting “flesh tones,” how to mix the right colors, and the elusive topic of “glazing.” I wanted to break down these surprisingly simple techniques that will help countless artists gain a firm grasp and a deeper understanding of what goes into creating beautiful and impressive paintings.
Additionally, hands and faces are challenging subjects for many artists, but they’re actually quite simple when broken down into easy-to-follow steps. This course gives you a thoughtfully narrated demonstration of how to approach all of the above in a straightforward way, where you can watch every step of the process.
